Public Boat Ramps & Access Areas on Lake Norman

Launching your own boat on Lake Norman is easy thanks to a network of public access areas spread around all four corners of the lake. Most are operated by Duke Energy, which built and maintains free public ramps as part of its hydroelectric licensing, while others are run by Mecklenburg County, Iredell County, and North Carolina State Parks.

These ramps give boat owners, anglers, and paddlers convenient, no-cost or low-cost access to North Carolina's largest lake. Below you'll find the most popular public launches, including their location, number of lanes, fees, and on-site amenities so you can pick the ramp closest to where you want to spend the day.

Tips for Using Lake Norman Boat Ramps

Arrive early on summer weekends - the busiest ramps like Blythe Landing and Ramsey Creek can back up by mid-morning. Have your boat prepped in the staging area before you pull onto the ramp: remove tie-downs, load gear, attach the bow line, and put in the drain plug so you can launch and clear the lane quickly.

Always use the courtesy dock to load and unload passengers rather than blocking the ramp. After retrieving your boat, pull well clear of the ramp before you finish strapping down. Practicing good ramp etiquette keeps the lines moving for everyone.

North Carolina law requires that boats and trailers be drained and free of aquatic plants when leaving the water to help stop the spread of invasive species. Take a minute to remove any vegetation from your trailer and hull before you leave the access area.

Free vs. Paid Launches

The good news for Lake Norman boaters is that the majority of public ramps - especially the Duke Energy access areas - are completely free to use. County park ramps like Blythe Landing and Ramsey Creek are also free to launch, though Ramsey Creek charges a seasonal parking fee for its swimming beach, and some parks have valet or rental services for an extra cost.

If a ramp is crowded or closed for maintenance, having a backup in mind saves the day. Because access areas ring the entire lake, there's almost always another free ramp within a short drive.
